SOUTHERN BURNER HEATERS
Electricity not required
Southern Burner Company's unit heaters are exactly what the name implies... individual units designed to be used singly or in groups to heat a unit of space to meet individual greenhouse requirements. Southern Burner heaters circulate warm air over the greenhouse somewhat like the heat rays from sunshine, from the floor up. They do not radiate heat because radiated heat goes directly to the top of the glass in the greenhouse and is lost. With Southern Burner Unit Heaters, the temperature at the top of the greenhouse can be held within 5 to 7 degrees of the floor temperature.
Southern Burner heaters have been in use in greenhouses all over the United States since 1932. In thousands of applications, this method of inexpensive heating has helped make if possible for the average person to have and enjoy a 'backyard' greenhouse, and at the same time make it possible for the large greenhouse operators to expand their glass area to the maximum without the expense of costly heating systems.
Southern Burner heaters will heat the same area as other systems on as little as half the fuel cost.
Convenient... Economical... Space-saving... and most important, plants an flowers grown in greenhouses equipped with Southern Burner heaters have always been top quality.
Single Stage Thermostat Southern Burner heaters are equipped with millivolt controls and wall mounted thermostat that require no electricity for operation. Two styles are available: The first being a Single Stage Thermostat that has a temperature range of 35 to 75 degrees. When you select a temperature setting the heater will cycle on and off at this setting. Regardless of the time of day or night.
Set Back Thermostat The Second Style is a Day and Night Set-Back Thermostat. This gives you the capability of two separate temperatures, one for day and one for night. The thermostat has an adjustable clock that you can choose from 15 minute intervals to set the temperature change from day to night settings. The clock is powered by an "AA" Alkaline battery still giving you the convenience of no electricity. Temperature range is from 45 to 90 degrees. Mounting of the thermostat can be up to 25 feet from the heater and should be shielded form direct sunlight or water.
Safety All controls have a 100% safety cut-off feature. If the pilot flame should go out for any reason, the millivolt control would shut off all gas to the heater. Pilot flame would have to be re-established before heater would operate.
Natural and L.P. Gas Southern Burner heaters are designed to operate under the side benches, installed flush with the front edge of the growing bench or at the end of the isle. Heaters are available for natural or L.P. gas. Heaters on L.P. gas must have a regulator on L.P. tank.
Heating Capacity In Northern states, it is suggested that one unit be placed for every 150 to 175 square feet of floor space in a conventional greenhouse. In Central states, place on unit heater to every 200 square feet of floor space. In the Southern states, we allow as much as 225 square feet to one unit.
Proper Ventilation Do not over look the necessity of providing a way for fresh air to enter the greenhouse. This is a 'must' and should not be eliminated. Illustrations show the proper way to install the air intake pipe for the model (C-1) and the model (A-1). A slight top ventilation is also necessary in the greenhouse to provide for circulation and exhaust. In case of heavy snows, take care not to let the vent pipe get buried as the heaters as the heaters need oxygen to burn properly.

Ventilation Requirements
All heaters require ventilation for proper operation. The L.B. White
Therma Grow is no different. The Therma Grow requires 2.5 CFM per
1000 Btu/h of air exchange. For a Therma Grow 220, this translates to
550 CFM of air exchange for an indoor installation, and 220 square
inches of exit area for an outside mount. Similarly, a Therma Grow 120
requires 300 CFM per indoor mount, and 120 square inches of exit
area per outdoor mount.
To make installation easy, L.B. White offers several preassembled
ventilation equipment packages. The following ventilation is required
for maximum performance.

All heaters require ventilation to support combustion and for proper operation. In the conventional gravity or power vented heaters, ventilation are built-in to the greenhouse as the heater is using the inside air and of course outside air being drawn inside the greenhouse for combustion and 20% or more of the heat and the product of combustions (CO, CO2, NO2, NOX, ethylene etc) are vented in the atmosphere which results in inefficiency. Also, once the vented heaters are operational, to keep the presure/air balance, cold air is being drawn from any infiltration in the greenhouse further reducing the inefficiency to 65-78% efficiency. In dollar terms, if you're spending $10,000 for the heating season, $6,500 to $7,800 are being spent in heating the plants while $2,200 to $3,500 are being wasted into thin air. Any leaks from the heater to the smoke stack for a vented heater inside the greenhouse would be devastating to the plants. The same can be said of any leaks from either natural gas or propane inside the greenhouse.
For a direct-fired heater like the L.B. White Therma Grow ventilation is no different. The Therma Grow still need air to support combustion, however, since it is direct fired, all the heat and the product of combustion (water vapor, CO,CO2, NO2, NOx, ethylene etc ) are all released directly inside the greenhouse so that no heat is wasted hence the 99.9% efficiency. However, as the Therma Grow heater keeps on running , it uses the air inside the Greenhouse to support combustion but in so doing, without any fresh air/oxygen and exhaust to keep the pressure/air balance, oxygen consumption is is being depleted there would be a build up of combustion byproducts like carbon monoxide and specially ethylene where the plants are sensitive to. Even if the Therma Grow is designed to be 99.9% efficient, there is still the matter of the 0.1% unburned fuel. In order to mitigate the buildup of ethylene and unburned fuel which is damaging to the plants, fresh air intake and to maintain the required air exchange, exhaust are required. The Therma Grow requires 2.5 CFM per 1000 Btu/h of air exchange. For a Therma Grow 220, this translates to 550 CFM of air exchange for an indoor installation, and 220 square inches of exit area for an outside mount.
You may think that your 6" to 10" smoke stack is large enough for the exhaust. but if you look at your existing exhaust stack, its connected to the heater, heat exchanger, burner and finally the burner motor. The motor for the burner has some adjustment to calibrate the amount of opening to draw in surrounding air/oxygen with the fuel mixture for optimum combustion. The opening is small and is insufficient for proper exhaust. Therefore, you'd still need the ventilation kit.
A .For new greenhouses, in addition to the building permit, you might as well apply for permits for the installation of heaters, gas tanks, gas lines. Check with your local building officials to the requirements..
A. Its best to have the heaters installed by licensed contractors from mechanical, piping and electrical standpoint. Being professionals, they should be able to comply with all necessary and safe installation in accordance with the latest building code.
A . Heater, mounting/ventilation kit or email dragon@dragonagro.com or call sales at 1-732-297-2829 for specifics.
Normally they're stock items and would be shipped the next day. Transit time for ground shipping is another 3 to 5 days. If stock runs out, About 1 to 2 weeks directly from the factory during the off season.
For Southern Burner: One year manufacturers warranty from date of purchase. Customer to be responsible for shipping to/from factory for parts.
For LB White Products: One-year product manufacturers warranty plus a 10- year warranty against heat chamber and case corrosion from date of purchase. Customer to be responsible for shipping to/from factory for parts.
A . Everything boils down to the size and materials use of your greenhouse, its geographical location, setpoint you'd like to maintain and your dealer would be able to size it for you.
A The best time to purchase and install the heater/s is just after the heating season. Lead time is much shorter and its more relaxing for the installers.
