Brighamia insignis Brighamia insignis or 'Cabbage on a stick' or Olulu Palm' is an endangered plant species endemic to Kaua'i and Ni'ihau in the Hawaiian Islands. The original pollinator of this plant has been eliminated over the years due to human development of the islands. Fortunately, the plant has been saved from extinction due to human intervention. The plants are now manually pollinated by humans. Not an easy task as it entails climbing down the steep sea cliff walls 3000 ft above sea level to pollinate the plant and again to collect the seed. Yellow Flowers smells like honeysuckles. The Hawaiian Palm is very robust but requires certain care. It needs sufficient yet indirect light. Be sure the plant is put in a reasonably sheltered position. Avoid overwatering. A regular, but measured dose (with plant food every now and then) is preferable. The plant doesn't have a rest period during the year, although growth is stronger in summer than in winter. It flowers in wintertime when about a foot tall. New leaves are formed at the top. The older, bottom leaves may turn yellow and should be removed. A milky juice sometimes appears from the trunk but this is nothing to worry about. Regular removal of the oldest leaves helps the plant retain a fresh apprearance and stimulates growth
