Genus of 10 species of stemless perennials, with solid tubers or upright scarred
rhizomes, from semi-evergreen monsoon forest in West Africa and S.E. Asia grown
for their handsome foliage and unusual flower. The unusual flowers have earned
members of this genus names such as bat flowers, cats' whiskers and devil's
tongue.
Cultivation: grow in a mix of equal parts leaf mold and coarse bark,
with added slow-release fertilizer in bright filtered light. Water freely all
year; in summer, mist regularly and apply a half-strength foliar fertilizer
removing old, decaying rhizomes. Outdoors, grow in fertile, moist but well drained,
leafy acidic soil in partial shade. Intermediate temperature from 55 to 85F.
Will require high humidity in order to prosper.
Propagation: Surface -sow seed at 72-81F in spring. Divide or take transverse
sections of rhizomes with at least one bud, in spring. Dust cut surfaces with
fungicide.
Pest and Diseases: Spider mites, tarsonemid mites and gray mold ( botrytis
) may be a problem.
